Wood Burning Stoves Have A Lot Going For Them

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

It may seem strange in this day in high tech, but wood burning stoves are more popular than they have been in almost 100 years. May people would think that a wood burning oven was about the least practical thing that you could put in your house. After all, there are so many drawbacks to a wood burning stove. First of all, there is not the same kind of fine temperature control as with a gas heater. Wood burning stoves, basically, are either on or off. When they are on, you have to constantly stock them with wood. When they are off, they take hours to get going again.

Nonetheless, the wood burning stove has a lot going for it. First of all, wood burning ovens are multipurpose. Not only can you use them to heat a room, you can also use them to dry clothes, and warm cold hands. You can even cook certain things on some wood burning stoves! There is also the matter of the cost of heating. Wood burning stoves used to be thought of as impractical because of the amount of labor that goes into running them. Nowadays, however, they make more and more sense. They burn wood very slowly, and in many areas fire wood is available for free. Having a wood burning stove can save you hundreds and hundreds of dollars every winter. For many families, that is no laughing matter.

Nonetheless, wood burning stoves do have a lot of hazards to them. Although they are easy to maintain, they have dangers that normal gas furnaces don’t have. Wood burning stoves need to be in the middle of your comment space. That means that if you have young children, they are at risk. If they run into the wood burning stoves, they can burn themselves! In addition, many people say that wood burning stoves have much greater emissions than other kind of heat. Even oil burning furnaces – notorious for the air pollution they produce – are supposed to be healthier for you that wood stoves. If your wood burning stove is not adequately insulated from the house, it can release hazardous indoor pollution and poison you and your family.

Nonetheless, even with all of these drawbacks, wood burning stoves make sense. They are enjoying a renaissance among environmentally conscious people. Not only are they efficient, but they also allow you to survive with less outside dependence on our shrinking natural gas supply.

Different Types Of Kitchenware For Shopping

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

There are a lot of brands which are being introduced into the market and more are being getting introduced these days. The competition is pretty tight in this field and people always prefer to have the best. They also get confused to get the right one they need. The same slogan is repeated by all telling that they are the best. This makes you even more confused. So it is always advised to decide about the purchase from house itself before stepping out to purchase kitchenware.

There are several questions to be depended upon before choosing a kitchenware. The question for how many people you cook would enable in determining the quantity of pots and pans and even the size of each of them. The next question that arises is about the food cooked by you often. Some may be make soups in large stockpots whereas others would never steam anything in stovetops as they use electric steamer. So by understanding the kind of food you cook it is easily possible for you to determine the kitchenware needed by you.

The most important thing to consider is the cleaning up process and how much do you prefer for that. If you go along with the cleaning process and like it then you could go for ordinary pans. But if it is a hell out then it would be pretty good to opt for non-stick cookware which would ease your cleaning process. There are certain easy cooking pots which help you to cook properly but cleaning those takes a lot of time and effort. Usually stainless steel is preferred by most of the professional cooks as it is light weight, less costly and even beautiful. But the only problem for the stainless cookware is that they are easy to work with but it is pretty difficult to clean them up.

Determining the type of stove also lets you finalize the kitchenware that is appropriate for you. This will let you know whether you need a flat bottom or round bottom pan. For all those latest induction cook tops, it is necessary to have ferrite in them which is magnetic in nature. The most important thing that determines your purchase is the budget. It was always recommended to buy the high quality cookware always as they are long lasting and also it only needs initial investment and then could be your soul mate for years to count.

The most important thing is to look for the weight and heft. The heavier kitchenware won’t warp over time and it is easy to control the heat in it too. Always look at the ductility of the pan. Never go for those which could be even slightly bend as they never stay long, always choose that kitchenware which makes you use for years.

Friday, May 14th, 2010

Can you use the same kind of cookware that you use in a regular oven? I have several glass bakeware dishes that say not to use on stovetop or under broiler, can these be used in a toaster oven?

anything’s fine, just as long as it can fit in there

How do you take off the stove top on a white-westinghouse stove?

Friday, May 14th, 2010

Trying to clean my stove, and need to take the stove top off, I unscrewed the screws but now it wont budge. How can I lift it for cleaning purposes.

The range front should lift up and hinge on the back. They are usually held in place with two very strong clips on the sides near the front. You should be able to lift up the front with about 10lbs of force and the top will pop up. If it takes more than that, take a look at an appliance repair website. I like repairclinic.com.

Kitchen Remodeling

Friday, May 14th, 2010

You’ve remodeled your living room and your dining room, but now you’re broke. You still want to get to the bedrooms upstairs, and you also have ideas for the kitchen. But any kitchen remodeling or bedroom remodeling will have to wait until you do a final survey of your bank balance.

Luckily for you, you find out that you have enough in your account to get through one more room without going completely broke. So now you have a tough choice. Do you want to go with your kitchen remodeling plans or do you want to start in one the bedroom?

Yes, it would be pleasant to come home to a nicely redone bedroom, something which didn’t look as if it came straight out of the Addam’s Family decorating handbook. But then again you only spend enough time in there to go to sleep and wake up in the morning.

Other times you’re either at work or somewhere in the living room or the kitchen. So that pretty much settles things. You’ll go in for your kitchen remodeling ideas, and blow whatever money you have left on making your kitchen a livable habitable place, where you don’t mind spending time, and where you won’t mind slaving over a hot stove to cook a great dinner.

Things are looking good at this point and you’ve already talked to someone about pulling out the shelves and the throwing out the old stove. No, your kitchen remodeling ideas are far grander than any old stove, so get to rip it out along with the antiquated sink that’s lately been making alarming gurgling noises.

This is where you can give in to your fantasies for the perfect kitchen and splurge, well as far as your budget will allow you to anyhow. But now you can finally spring for that electric stove, and those space saving cupboards that also don’t look half bad. A good sink is a must and something that you had already provided for in your kitchen remodeling plans and budget.

Next you can’t forget the paint chips for you to set your seal of approval to. In your original kitchen remodeling plans you had chosen a safe shade of cream and eggshell white. But now looking at all the choices you have, you think you might go for a bright red trim on your cupboards, glistening chrome and rich cream colored walls. And all of this with a matching set of white lace curtains at the windows and pine colored counter tops.

Your kitchen remodeling is almost complete and you have yet to break the bank, so you’re well satisfied with the outcome. You’ll also now probably spend most of your time trying out new dishes in your brand new kitchen. Who knew kitchen remodeling could be so rewarding?

Must Haves for Any At-home Chef

Friday, May 14th, 2010

With the holidays on their way soon, many people will be beefing up kitchens to handle the increased demand for ‘fit for a king’ meals. Not being a professional Chef shouldn’t stop you from being able to cook like one. But, you’ll need the right tools to create those tantalizing dishes. Read on and find out the five tools that no kitchen cook should be without.

Mixing Bowls

Make sure that you have a good, quality set of mixing bowls on hand – the bigger the better! Many dishes need to be beaten, blended or mixed. You’ll be glad you didn’t skimp on the mixing bowls when you need to perform any of those tasks. Most professional chefs prefer to use stainless steel mixing bowls. However, there are many quality plastic sets available, like the ones made by OXO. But be aware that plastic bowls can become hard to clean over time, especially if used for heavy duty sauces, and may need to be replaced.

Pre-Seasoned Cookware

Cast iron skillets, pots and pans have long been a choice of the pros. But, cast iron cookware can be a little daunting. Seasoning, pre-seasoning, re-seasoning, cooking the seasonings in, oils to use, etc. to ensure your skillet is ready, is a hassle many cooks would rather not deal with. Now you don’t have to. You can buy cast iron cookware galore – already seasoned – so that you have no fuss and still get the same great benefits of those using simple cast iron. Lodge is a well known maker of pre-seasoned cookware and offers many different types of cast iron cookware. Be aware –soap nor dishwashers should be used for your prized possessions.

Specialty Measuring Spoons

If you’ve ever seen one of grandma’s old recipes refer to a pinch, smidgen or dash and have had to take a guess at the meaning (and hope you’re right) then you absolutely must grab a set of pinch, smidgen or dash measuring spoons. No more guessing or testing your interpretations on your guests (as fun as that may be). This set also makes a great conversation starter – especially at family gatherings where elder members may take you on a trip down memory lane.

First out Pie Spatula

What could possibly ruin the perfect homemade Dutch crumb apple pie? Having it fall apart while you try to get that first piece out of the pie dish. Well, here is a secret of the pros – use a first out pie spatula. You bake the spatula in with the pie. When the pie comes out of the oven and cools, you make the cuts and lift that first piece out in perfect appetizing condition!

Kitchen Companion Guide

Ever wonder how long you need to steam asparagus? Not sure how to stick a thermometer in a turkey? Never butterflied a pork chop before? For all the weird, rarely used information you may need, while preparing a feast, you can turn to a kitchen guide. Look for a kitchen guide which specializes in everything and anything you may need to know while cooking any meal in any kitchen. For a complete guide that has gotten rave reviews, check out the Williams-Sonoma Kitchen Companion: The A to Z Guide to Everyday Cooking, Equipment and Ingredients.

Many of the above items may not be featured at your local retail store, so you might want to find a local kitchen specialty store near you or do your shopping online. But, if you enjoy the art of cooking and want to be armed with the best tools possible, you now have a few more to add to your arsenal which will help you cook like the pros.

The New Face of Ranges

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

So your range has conked out forcing you to bite the bullet and purchase a new one. Have you looked at stoves recently? They’ve changed a lot in the last 15 years and you’ll be surprised at the choices that are available to you.

First, you’ll have to decide if you want a slide in or freestanding range. Freestanding ranges tend to be more economical and one of the most popular choices for a stove. Slide in ranges sit flush with your counter top and cabinetry and appear almost as a built in stove top. Standard venting is available or a downdraft where the stove vents through the wall or floor with no need for an overhead fan.

Most conventional stoves are 30 inches wide, but are also available in widths ranging from 24 to 48 inches. You can also choose between gas, electric and dual gas (gas cook top and electric oven), or induction cook top and an electric oven.

How do you want your oven to heat? Convection ovens distribute the heat with fans to create a more efficient cooking system. Your burners can be standard coil, solid, or ceramic top and may also incorporate griddles, grills or woks.

Here is an outline of some of the newest models and what they have to offer.

The GE Profile offers a dual oven system to eliminate waiting for oven space during holiday get togethers. It has a 2.2 cubic foot upper oven and a 4.4 cubic foot lower oven and self-cleaning racks.

Sharp’s Insight and Insight Pro Ranges, combine the features of an electric cook top, convection oven and a microwave drawer.

Induction ranges are offered by a number of suppliers that uses magnets to produce heat for faster and more efficient heating. Kenmore has a model that includes a 5.8 cubic foot convection oven, an AirGuard system that eliminates odors, a warming drawer and extra large viewing window.

If you’re into the vintage look, Elmira Stoveworks has a model with old style burners, and either chrome or a choice of nine colors with contrasting trim. Unlike the originals, this stove has a self-cleaning oven, convection and a choice of gas or electric.

The Saute/Step-Up Hybrid Range from American Range mimics similar models found in the kitchens of French and Italian restaurants. It has an extra elevated row of burners for sauteing. The front induction burners can fit large 16 inch pans or soup pots.

The striking Fratelli Onofri’s Royal Chantishire Double Oven and Giant Oven is available in a number of hammered finishes. The ovens sit side-by-side instead of the standard vertical placement.

8 Ways to Control Your Appetite

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

Be kind to yourself. Stay well away from pharmacy shelves than if you try to help curb your appetite. Apart from the high costs of appetite suppressant drugs, their dependence on nature and observe the side effects make it a potentially dangerous choice. Given that in most cases their effects are of short duration and its weight quickly rebounds when you stop taking them, not only are expensive and dangerous, but really too useless.

There are many natural methods for controlling your appetite. The following eight have been chosen for being effective, cheap and easy for everyone to implement.

1: Exercise. Contrary to popular opinion, you do not “work up an appetite” through exercise. Exercise is a proven appetite suppressant. It stimulates brain chemicals known as endorphins. These are your body’s natural pain killers that give you a mood boost and reduce your appetite. (The corollary is that people who lack these endorphins due to insufficient exercise tend to boost their mood via “comfort food” instead.)

2: Drink more water, regularly. The human body craves hydration long before it craves food. Modern society and product marketing has ‘educated’ people into confusing thirst with hunger. Drinking water at regular intervals throughout the day will help to keep your appetite in check.

3: Avoid artificial sweeteners. Despite the well publicised fact of artificial sweeteners having no calories, they are the enemy of the dieter. Many studies in both human and animals have proven conclusively that these chemical sweeteners stimulate the appetite. Avoid them like the plague. Particularly do not drink diet sodas. Stick with water.

4: Spice & season your food. A recent study demonstrated that sprinkling common spices and seasonings such as herbs like oregano and others reduces the human appetite. The reasoning appears to be that the blander the food, the more a person tends to eat to feel satisfied. Herbal seasonings have next to no calories and enhance the flavour of your food, leading to earlier satiety.

5: Don’t miss breakfast. Skipping this most important meal of the day not only slows your metabolism, it results in snacking and binge eating later in the day.

6: Avoid sugars and starches. Eat proteins and non-starchy fibers. Other than the obvious calorie implications of sugars, sugars and starches are short-chain carbohydrates that are very rapidly converted into blood glucose, then very rapidly stored in muscle and fat tissue. This leads to rapid spikes and troughs, highs and lows, in your daily blood sugar levels and thus the urge to eat to treat those low points. Protein foods and high fiber non-starchy vegetables are more nutritious and take longer to fully digest – preventing those blood sugar spikes and troughs.

7: Eat slowly. After the first mouthful of food at a meal, it takes about twenty (20) minutes for the satiety signal from your stomach to reach your brain. Make a habit of taking a bite, then put your cutlery while chewing food thoroughly. Do not withdraw the new tool until you have completely chewed and swallowed what is in your mouth. The development of this habit gives your brain time to recognize what you have already consumed the first shower in the mouth too. Eat slowly, which means you feel fuller on less food intake.

8: To develop healthy sleep patterns. The lack of sleep or disrupted sleep patterns of different disrupt hormonal functions in your body, at least two of which lead to loss of appetite control. Moreover, most people tend to compensate for their feeling of a lack of energy caused by lack of sleep by drinking too much or calories. A constant, more than eight hours of sleep per night will help in controlling appetite as hormonal desire during the day.

Cooking Lesson: Seasoning Cast Iron Like the Pros

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

In the days before we had non-stick cookware, we had the next best thing – seasoned cast iron cookware. While non-stick cookware has certainly outdone cast iron cookware in the non-stick category, cast iron pots and pans are still favored by many chefs, including the professionals because of their durability and ability to retain flavor.

But, if you’re not lucky enough to have a hand-me-down from Grandma, you may find yourself confused about how to become a cast iron chef. Have no fear – you can learn to season cast iron cookware with the pros and keep them in great shape for years to come.

Seasoning New Cast Iron Cookware

The process is actually quite simple. When done correctly, your pans will last a long time and may even become your own hand-me -downs in the future.

1. Heat your oven to 300 degrees.

2. Coat the pan with lard or grease. (Be sure that you do not use vegetable oil or commercial cooking sprays. While they may seem easier, they will not only cause your cookware to be seasoned incorrectly, but they will also leave a sticky film on the outside of the cookware that is impossible to remove.)

3. Place the pan in the oven on the middle rack and allow it to bake for 15 minutes.

4. Remove the pan and pour out any excess grease or lard.

5. Put the pan back into the oven and bake for another two hours.

6. Repeat as needed

Many cast iron enthusiasts will swear upon repeating the seasoning process several times before ever using the cookware the first time. Each time you season the cookware, the seasoning bond becomes stronger. Many people will recommend that the first few times the cookware is used it should be used to cook greasy foods (bacon, fatty meats, etc.) to again strengthen the seasoning bond.

Re-seasoning Cookware

If you find that you seasoned the pan improperly the first time, or if food starts to stick to the pan after a period of time in use, you may want to re-season the cookware.

1. Wash the cookware thoroughly with a steel wool pad (doing this while the pan is warm and still safe to touch is best).

2. Make sure the pan is fully dry (use a towel if needed).

3. Follow the seasoning steps above to re-season the pan.

Cleaning Your Cast Iron Cookware

To make your cookware last the test of time, be sure to take proper care of it. Remember the creed of every enthusiast of cast iron – no soap and no steel wool. Soap and steel wool will cause a breakdown in the seasoning bond and should not be used to clean your cookware on a regular basis. If you’re baffled at this moment, have no fear. Cleaning cast iron cookware is a breeze.

1. You’ll need to rinse your cookware while it is still hot. If food is stuck to it, then scrape the pan or pot as needed.

That’s it! Remember not to store food in your cast iron cookware because it may attach a metallic flavor to the food. In addition, store your pans with the lids off to prevent moisture from accumulating and rusting from occurring.

Now that you know the ins and outs to cast iron cookware, you can start creating your own family heirloom – as well as some great food!
