how do you change a drop in stove to a stand alone stove?

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

My old stove is a drop-in and I want a stand alone stove. Can I just cut the wood in my cabinets at the bottom of the stove?

Without seeing it, I can only guess that the section of cabinets that contains the stove is actually a component of your whole system. If that is the case, you should be able to remove the cabinets under the drop-in and slide a stove in the space. Measure the stove first and check the cabinets to see if you can pull out that section.

If that is not the case, you would have to saw the cabinet out. That might take a little more work, but is possible.

How To Find A Cheap Pellet Stove

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

Lately, quite a few visitors have arrived at my web site by using the search phrase cheap pellet stove. There aren’t any articles on the site aimed specifically at finding a cheap pellet stove, so I shopped around and came up with these suggestions.

The first stove that comes to mind is the PelPro model HHPP2BD wood pellet stove. This unadorned stove, known alternately as Cheap Charlie and Franklin 120 Home Heater has a 120 lb hopper capacity and generates 15,000 – 50,000 btu’s per hour; enough heat for 800 – 2000 sq.ft.

This popular stove can be purchased online at Homeclick for $1802.95, shipping included. However, you can purchase the same stove for $1499 by visiting an Aubuchon Hardware store in person. Further savings can be realized if you purchase your stove in a state with no sales tax, such as New Hampshire.

How you pay for your stove is equally important as how much you pay. If you finance the purchase of your stove with a credit card, the money you saved by being a savvy shopper will be spent on credit card interest.

The best time to buy a wood pellet or corn stove is during the summer when everyone else is looking for air conditioners. There’s no reason you can’t try to bargain with the salesman just as you would when buying a car.

If you wait until January, when demand is high, you won’t be in a position to bargain. It’s hard to bargain when there’s nothing left to buy. Likewise, you should be lining up a source of fuel for your stove long before the heating season begins.

Another cheap pellet stove is the United States Stove model #6039 multifuel stove. A multifuel stove offers the versatility of burning either corn or wood pellets, whichever is cheaper.

At http://usstove.com, the model #6039 multifuel stove is selling for $2200. Going back to Aubuchon Hardware, it’s $1799.99. And if we do just a little more shopping around, we can find the exact same stove on sale at Orscheln Farm and Home for only $1599.

Another cheap pellet stove worth looking at is the Breckwell Big-E Utility pellet stove. This 50,000 btu stove heats 2,000 sq. ft. and comes equipped with a large 140 lb. hopper. The listed price is $1549.

Perhaps your best chance of finding a real cheap pellet stove is by looking through your local Bargain Hunter’s Guide for used stoves. I found a used Dovetec corn pellet stove in East York, Ontario, selling for only $250.

Can I connect insulated stove pipe directly to the wood stove?

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

I am hooking up a wood stove and was wondering if it’s possible to connect the insulated pipe directly to the wood stove.

You need to use the insulated pipe from the ceiling box up. You DON’T necessarily have to settle for single wall pipe down to the stove. There is a pipe called "close clearance" stove pipe which is double wall but not insulated. We heat our store with wood and the pipe stays cool enough that it won’t burn you on contact. If you’re using a good air tight EPA stove you shouldn’t be losing enough heat up the pipe to help "heat" the house with. If you can post what brand of insulated pipe you’re using I can send you all of the part numbers that you need. Hope this helps! I hate seeing so much bad information on here!!

How do you convert a pellet stove to a wood stove?

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

My husband and I are buying a house with a pellet stove and would like to have a wood-burning stove instead. Is it possible to swap the pellet stove out and how hard is it?

If you simply remove a free standing pellet stove and add a wood stove without changing the stove pipe you will burn your house down. A wood stove puts a lot of heat out the chimney(not as effecient). If you have an insert in an original wood burning firplace you will need to remove the pellet stove and restore the wood fireplace to its original condition including the chimney if needed. If you have a free standing pellet stove with a small 3"-4" pipe going to the outside for exhaust then you would have to completely convert that to a larger 6′-8′ triple wall pipe which will cost at least $300 alone depending on how far it has to go.

You wont find a wood stove more effecient than a pellet stove so I unless it is for ornamental purposes only I would leave it alone. I know that wood fires can be more natural and more appealing than a pellet fire but it is your preference.

How a Pellet Stove Can Save You Money

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

With the cost of home heating fuel increasing rapidly, many homeowners have chosen to purchase small stove to heat small areas and decrease the demand on their heater. A pellet stove is one of the most efficient and environmentally friendly stoves for this purpose. They are self-refueling and come in a variety of sizes and attractive finishes.

Don’t be quick to compare a pellet stove to a fireplace or free-standing wood burning stove. Pellet stoves are sophisticated self-fueling appliances that use fuel made from scrap wood. Most models are completely self-regulating and require very little maintenance on the part of the owner.

How Pellets Stoves Work

Pellet stoves are not simply stoves that are retrofitted to burn pellets. They are designed from the ground up to make the most of their fuel. On the outside, they usually resemble traditional stoves. Manufacturers offer many different styles so that homeowners can choose one to fit their décor. On the inside, there is a firebox, a hopper, a pilot light, and a fan system.

Most models are completely electric and can be plugged into an outlet. Some even use auxiliary solar panels. The electricity is used to run the control panel, ventilation system, and pilot light. Self-igniting stoves allow the user to start the fire via the control panel and switch the pilot light on and off in order to regulate temperature. The fans circulate air around the fuel in order to ensure even burning.

These stoves are designed to make the most out of wood pellet fuel. The pellets are actually compressed sawdust and other organic waste collected from manufacturers of wood products. Its reclaimed, renewable fuel is one of the reasons the pellet stove is praised as an environmentally conscience way to heat one’s home.

Wood pellets are not used strictly because they find a use for what would otherwise be waste. They are also incredibly efficiently burning. In the proper stove, they can be up to 98% efficient. This means that almost all of the material is turned into heat energy for the home. This also means that the stoves do not require chimneys, but rather employ small exhaust systems. A quality stove has a ventilation system that encourages clean and even burning. Fuel distribution systems also help by releasing the right amount of fuel from the hopper, so that pellets are not wasted and the level of heat is maintained.

Since most stoves have thermostats and automated hoppers, they are less work than their wood-burning cousins. In fact, most owners can use a pellet stove all winter and only have to refuel and empty the ashbin. However, this is not the only advantage to a pellet stove.

Saving Money with Pellets

Last winter, many homeowners were outraged by the cost of their heating bill. As the price of fuel has steadily risen, many have turned to localized heat sources in order to avoid paying to heat their entire house. The addition of a stove is perfect for this application because unlike other systems, the heat can be localized to one area. Selectively heating an area of the house saves money for obvious reasons. The benefit of a stove is that it can heat a small area more quickly and for less money than a traditional system.

Many people use heating oil in their furnace in order to heat their home during the winter. There are many other options, such as electric systems and natural gas, but heating fuel is one of the most popular choices in areas with severe winters. Heating fuel is in high demand during the winter months and its price during that time reflects this. However, in the past the cost of heating fuel was proportional to other options. Other price changes are due to fluctuations in the price of crude oil from which it is derived. Recently, crude oil speculation and increased demand has sent heating fuel prices climbing to record highs.

Wood pellets, in the other hand, are made from renewable scrap material. Though they may sometimes be hard to find, a 40-pound bag of pellets can be purchased for around six dollars. How long a bag like this will last is dependent on the stove and how often it is used. Due to the rising popularity of pellet stoves, pellet supplies maybe difficult to find during the winter. Thankfully, distribution is expected to meet demand in the coming years.

A pellet stove can make an attractive and practical addition to any home. Homeowners who are concerned about heating their home this winter should definitely look into installing one of these stoves.
